The 11 Steps to Building a Custom Home
with West Custom Homes
Understanding the steps to building a custom home is the first move toward making a confident investment. At West Custom Homes, we follow a structured custom home building process designed to eliminate uncertainty and protect your investment from day one. Every step is clearly defined, financially aligned, and personally overseen to ensure quality and accountability.
With a background in finance and years of construction leadership, Keith West approaches each home with both craftsmanship and discipline. The result is a process that is thoughtful, predictable, and built around your goals. Based on the Northshore, West Custom Homes builds custom homes across Mandeville, Madisonville, Covington, and Abita Springs, as well as Metairie, New Orleans and the surrounding Greater New Orleans area.

Our Steps to Building a Custom Home:
From Concept to Completion
Our custom home building process follows eleven steps. Each one builds on the last, keeping the project on schedule and protecting the long-term value of your home. We break it into two parts: the planning and design work that happens before ground is broken, and the construction sequence from foundation to front door.

Part 1: Planning, Design & Pre-Construction
(Steps 1–5)
What happens before construction begins is what separates a smooth build from a stressful one. These five stages lock in your vision, protect your budget, and resolve the details before a single nail is driven.
Step
1
Consultation & Vision Planning
Every project begins with conversation. We discuss your lifestyle, design preferences, timeline, and budget expectations. This step establishes feasibility and aligns the scope of work with your goals. Whether you are building on the Northshore in Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, or Madisonville, or on the Southshore in Metairie or New Orleans, the conversation starts the same way: with your goals, your budget, and your vision for the home.
Step
2
Budget Development & Financial Clarity
Transparency starts early. Detailed cost projections are developed so you understand exactly how layout choices, materials, and upgrades influence the total investment. This kind of upfront clarity is what keeps timelines intact and eliminates the surprise costs that derail too many custom builds.
Step
3
Site Evaluation & Pre-Construction Planning
If you already own property, we evaluate soil conditions, elevation, drainage, setbacks, and utility access. If you are still selecting a homesite, we assist in reviewing options to avoid costly surprises during the build. Site suitability can make or break a budget. This step prevents that.
Step
4
Architectural Design & Engineering
Working with architects and engineers, we refine floor plans, elevations, and structural components. Every detail balances aesthetics, functionality, and long-term durability. This is where your vision begins to take shape on paper, and where costly design changes are far easier to make.
Step
5
Specifications, Selections & Software Setup
Materials, finishes, fixtures, and cabinetry are finalized with guidance and defined allowances. All selections are organized, documented, and aligned with your approved budget.
We utilize the state-of-the-art CoConstruct project management platform designed specifically for custom home builders. The online interface allows you and our team to efficiently track every phase, from selections to scheduling, in real time. Less back-and-forth. More confidence.

Part 2: The Construction Journey
(Steps 6–11)
Once planning is complete and permits are in hand, the build begins. Each step follows a defined sequence, with inspections and personal oversight built in at every level.
Step
6
Permitting & Construction Scheduling
Before ground is broken, we coordinate all required approvals, inspections, and trade scheduling. Getting this right before construction starts is what keeps the build moving once it does.
Step
7
Foundation
Once your homesite is cleared and the building pad is complete, we begin the foundation. The foundation is installed and inspected to plan specifications. Everything built above it depends on getting this right.
Step
8
Framing, Roof & Mechanical Rough-Ins
We complete the rough grade around the building pad to establish proper drainage, then begin framing your home. As framing nears completion, windows and exterior sheathing are installed. Your home truly begins to take shape.
Once the roof is installed, mechanical rough-ins begin: HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and structured wiring are all run by licensed professionals in accordance with code and performance standards.
Step
9
Insulation, Inspections & Drywall
With framing complete, your home undergoes the required inspections, clearing the way for insulation installation. Once insulation is in place, we hang drywall and complete the texture. By the end of this step, the interior of your home starts to feel tangible.
Step
10
Interior & Exterior Finishes
This is where craftsmanship becomes visible. Cabinetry, doors, and trim are installed. Interior walls and millwork are painted. Tile, plumbing fixtures, and light fixtures are set. Carpet and hardwood floors are laid, and all exterior details come together: siding, roofing, and hardware.
By the end of Step 10, what was once a frame is unmistakably your home.
Step
11
Final Inspections, Walkthrough & Delivery
We complete all final punch-out items and touchups. We walk through the finished home with you, covering every system, finish, and detail. Your home is not delivered until it passes final inspection and meets our standards, not just code minimums.
Our relationship does not end at closing. We remain a resource for questions, long-term support, and referrals. A home built well should be supported well. Welcome home.
What Sets Our Custom
Home Building Process Apart
We’ve built countless homes across the Greater New Orleans region. One process, refined over years of experience. Here is what makes our steps to building a custom home different from other builders in the area.
Financial Discipline
Keith’s background in accounting means every decision gets evaluated through both a design lens and a budget lens. You will not receive a surprise invoice.
Boutique Oversight
We build a limited number of homes each year, so Keith stays personally involved in every one of them. You will not be handed off to someone you have never met.
Industry Leadership
Keith holds active leadership roles in local, state, and national builder associations. That keeps our process current and our clients ahead of the curve.
Real-Time Transparency
Our project management platform gives you a real-time view of your build at every phase, from selections and scheduling to progress and documentation. No guessing, no chasing updates.

Build with Confidence
A well-built home is not the result of chance. It is the product of organization, experience, and disciplined execution. Knowing the steps to building a custom home is a start. Having a builder who manages every one of them with discipline and transparency is what actually makes the difference.
